Amidst the 20,000 signatures gathered in an online petition, the Copenhagen Zoo in Denmark still euthanized Marius, a two-year old healthy male giraffe and slaughtered its carcass in front of the crowd visitors including children and then fed it to lions.
According to the zoo spokesman Tobias Stenbaek Bro, Marius was killed by a bolt gun, not a lethal injection because this would contaminate the meat. The zoo management acted this due to the recommendation of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA) to avoid inbreeding because of the outnumbering giraffes with similar genes in the organization’s breeding program. Inbreeding is the reproduction from the mating of pairs who are closely related genetically. May result homozygosity which can increase the chances of offspring being affected by recessive or deleterious traits that may generally leads to a decreased fitness of the population. The sweetest day of the year for couples to celebrate but the worst for those who don’t have partners, an ordinary day for a regular worker and a time when children were ask by their teacher to create valentines card to be given to their parents when they go home. This is our typical Valentine’s Day routine.
Though it is not declared as a special non-working holiday, this day seemed to be, people are very busy even a day before to buy gifts and greeting cards for their spouse and partner. Hotels and Restaurants are at its peak on this season and fully booked. Amusement parks and malls were loaded with teenagers that in despite of their young age, it seems that their heart is fully conscious of showing love and caress to their partners. We are all advocating for something, we intentionally adopt a thought for a purpose. We do it because we believe we are advocating it for a change that is needed especially in our existing society. Though the advocacy can be hidden at some point, the biases will always come out in the end making it a habitual practice.
Advocacy journalism like many other form of journalism is said to be factual, based on truth and evidences. But the difference is that journalists’ who are practicing it advocates for their own stories. It is said that in contrast every advocacy journalists’ have an opinion in the stories they are writing. They have the power and the right to choose on which story and side they must stand because of their biases and a thought that it is the best angle for the story. Ever since I keep on wondering, does our so called father in heaven listens to the cries and complaints of our animals? Does he even bother to look at on their situation and place on this planet? Does he even care to touch them with his miraculous hands when they needed it the most?
We are all told that there is one ultimate creator who created us, the earth, water, air, and all the forms of life inhabiting the Earth. Thus it is engraved in our minds that humans are formed based on his image, we are his reflection, his favorite being to the point of giving us the privilege to live freely without any predator that will be threatening our lives. Animals outnumbered humans in terms of kind and unlike man they are scattered even in the deepest part of the sea. They can also perform such abilities that man cannot, birds can fly, fishes can swim, they have these unique gifts that man are not capable of, but because of man’s intelligence he has able to exceed and compass everything. The merriest celebration in the world that symbolizes the birth of our savior, the son of God who was send on Earth and destined to die on the cross to save us from our sin. A widely observed holiday that is being commemorated by all the Christian believing countries around the world.
Christmas season is the most awaited time of the year because it is thought to be the most superb. The celebration mainly focuses on giving and sharing their blessings and family togetherness, foods, decorations, exchange gift, attending church mass and other material things symbolizing the festivity. This entire cultural and commercial phenomenon has been observed for the past centuries now. The traditions and practices which are both religious and secular in nature are centered on the worship of Jesus Christ. Journalism is one of the important grounds for democracy as it drives the freedom of expression and speech. Journalist’s is believed to have the obligation and affiliation to its country and countrymen to become the orator of truth. Therefore, democracy is restored because media have been able to assert their role in enriching and deepening the meaning of democracy.
As Mark Toldo a program researcher at Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho says, “Democracy is what keeps Journalism alive and at the same time, journalism is what keeps democracy stable. Both of them need balancing or else, both of them might not be able to achieve its purpose and perform their function in the growth of society.” Journalist’s and democracy performs a mutual role in our society though democracy can be mandated by law; it is a form of government being rule by the people and requires an active participation of its citizens. Public criticisms and opinions are essentials in the process of check and balances among the three branches of the government. |
