The clash of two broadcast journalist, the other was on the field and the other was confined on his studio. Korina Sanchez, a veteran radio and TV news presenter in the Philippines criticized Anderson Cooper, a CNN anchor and reporter in her radio program on DZMM after Cooper reported on government’s slow relief action to the survivors of typhoon Haiyan in Tacloban.

Sanchez said, : “Itong si Anderson Cooper, sabi wala daw government presence sa Tacloban. Mukhang hindi niya alam  ang sinasabi niya.” Immediately, Sanchez commentaries became a hot topic on social media sites, something that Cooper was not about to slip by, Cooper on his part made a statement about the issue.

Anderson Cooper stated, “Here’s what I actually said: As for who exactly is in charge of the Philippine side of operation, that is not really clear. I am just surprised. I expected on this Day Five, I thought I may have gotten here very late, that things will be well in hand; it does not seem like that. People are desperate, they do not have any place for shelter. It’s very difficult for people to get food, neighbors are helping out neighbors, water is in short supply, it is a very very bad situation here.” Cooper stated.

Cooper also challenged Korina to come to Tacloban City to see for herself, he said, “Miss Sanchez is welcome to go there (Tacloban City) and I would urge her to go there. I don’t know if she has, but her husband is the interior minister and I’m sure she can arrange a flight,” he added.

Korina Sanchez happened to be the wife of Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Mar Roxas, one of the key officials in the relief efforts conducted by the Philippine Government.

Netizens favored Cooper to his reporting and thanked CNN and other foreign media’s that covered the devastation of Typhoon Haiyan, because of them there will be no immediate relief and efforts globally to the survivor.

When the whole media industry local and foreign reports that there is really a slow relief effort on the part of the government, and one media personality was against all odds, we can question her credibility and accuracy. In Sanchez case, there is a hidden agenda why she criticized Cooper, CNN and Anderson Cooper is a global personality, everybody knows CNN perhaps, Sanchez is the wife of Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Mar Roxas, who happened to be one of the government officials responsible of immediate relief and operation.

Since Sanchez is a known personality in the country, she taught she could shape the mind of her fellow kababayans to deny Coopers report. But the whole nation sympathy belongs to the CNN anchor, first he was on the ground zero of the devastation, he reported live several times after the typhoon hit Tacloban, he has pictured the suffering and cries of the survivors who asks for the presence of the government, second he has no objective to neither become bias, against nor favour the government, he has no direct connection and reason to denounce Aquino’s administration.

We Filipino people should thank Cooper indeed, not just foreign but all the local media who are doing everything for us to become connected to the affected people of Tacloban and the Visayan region. Media’s presence served as a wakeup call for the government to double their relief and recovery effort.

Media also connect families together, media outfits opened their airwaves for announcements and plea from the survivors, for their loved ones to know that they are alive and really needs help.

Media is really the voice of the people, it serves as the eye that see, the ears that hear and the voice of the unheard, in situation like this, media practitioners must exempt themselves from any unnecessary commentaries that could not help, but protects one party.
