EDSA or Epifanio delos Santos Avenue a historic site of the 1986 People Power Revolution that kicked out the dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos and provided the way for Corazon Aquino presidency. It is also the main circumferential road and highway of Manila and passes through the cities of Pasay, Makati, Mandaluyong, Quezon City, and Caloocan. Formerly known as Highway 54, EDSA represents the 54-kilometer stretch of the avenue. It was then renamed for Filipino historian Epifanio delos Santos in 1959 through Republic Act 2140. In honor of former President Corazon C. Aquino, a Congressman has proposed the renaming of Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA) in Metro Manila to Cory Aquino Avenue.
Bohol 1st District Rep. Rene Relampagos said that the House Bill 5422 is in honor of the late President Corazon Aquino, democracy icon and the first woman president of the country. Relampagos said the measure also seeks to repeal Republic Act 2140 changing the name of Highway 54 in the province of Rizal to Epifanio de los Santos Avenue in honor of Don Epifanio de los Santos.“It would be a fitting tribute to former President Corazon C. Aquino, a woman of courage and valor, that EDSA – an avenue that became testament to the country’s love of democracy – be named after her,” he stressed. EDSA has become synonymous to the People Power Revolution or to democracy. The people's revolt is also dubbed as EDSA 1 as the historic ouster of the late strongman Ferdinand Marcos happened on the main highway, which connects the six districts of Metro Manila. He said
"President Aquino gained the respect, and certainly, the admiration, not only of the citizens of our country, but also of the world. She earned certain citations and was recognized internationally as a woman who helped pave the way for the restoration of democracy," Relampagos stressed. “Indeed, one cannot think of the 1986 EDSA Revolution without thinking of Corazon C. Aquino. Even after her term as President of the Republic, she lived her life fighting for democracy, as she goes out of her way to fight for justice and truth, for peace and democracy,” Relampagos said in filing House Bill 5422. However, the changing of the name of EDSA to Cory Aquino Avenue, which is now becoming popular to social networking sites which has trend on twitter around the world, has irritated a few Filipino citizens.House Bill 5422 must undergo committee and plenary hearings, and it needs to be approved by the majority of House members before it can be passed.
